05.12.05 • spring onions (0)

D70 • f/4.5 • 1/200 • ISO 400

Sometimes random shots from the roof surprise me. Not sure why, but I like this one.

04.21.05 • green green grass (6)

D70 • f/7.1 • 1/500 • ISO 200

As a thunderhead moved in from the east today, this long grass seemed impossible to photograph, and was. This is the one I like the best of the batch.

03.19.05 • trunk blossom (3)

D70 • f/5 • 1/50 • ISO 400

More attempts at the amazing blossoms out around town these days.

02.09.05 • pine cone (2)

D70 • f2.8 • 1/500 • ISO 200

Another from yesterday's beautiful sunny afternoon on the roof. I hope to get out and get more fresh photos soon, but have spent alot of time on the site rewrite. Soon, I expect to switch over, minus a feature or two.

02.08.05 • ladybug (2)

D70 • f2.0 • 1/2000 • ISO 200

Caught this little friend on the roof today. Like me, she seems to be taking advantage of the sunny afternoon. A little break in the gloom before the rest of winter, no doubt.

In case you missed yesterdays followup comment, I'm currently redoing the entire site with a new look and feel. I've been slowly getting parts of the site redesigned. If you'd like to check out the new look, and comment on it, you can see it here. Please note that the comment form doesn't yet work, so you'll have to comment the old way. Pages I have converted at the moment are about and archive.

01.27.05 • canyon sage (0)

C2000-Z • f11 • 1/30 • ISO 100

Another 'spring thoughts' type of photo from the archives. Spring in the Deschutes canyon is overwhelmed by the smell of fresh desert sage.

NEWS: If you are so inclined, please help out photoblogs.org as they are currently experiencing some growing pains. I'm sure any donations would be appreciated! It's a great site that helps so many photoblogs get viewers from all over the world. A great service indeed!

01.25.05 • tygh valley #2 (0)

C2000-Z • f4.0 • 1/320 • ISO 100

Another shot of Tygh Valley taken while pointing and clicking on the drive home from the Deschutes River. Just another gorgeous day east of the Cascades.

01.14.05 • pinwheel bloom (0)

2000-Z • f2.5 • 1/250 • ISO 100

Another oldie, but I think goodie. It should be a touch sharper, but I've always liked how this one turned out. Again from old rolls from the 2000-Z, I'm still having fun sifting through old photos. Soon, I should get a chance to go shooting new stuff again. I hope everyone is still enjoying the older photos.

01.11.05 • baja critters #2 (3)

2000-Z • f11 • 1/100 • ISO 100 • flash

Another from last year in Baja. I'm pretty sure this is a common black widow. At least they certainly were common in the rocks near the beach at night. There had to be literally hundreds of these out at night sitting just like this... waiting. Of course, I don't recommend this kind of night critter photography unless you've had at least three shots of really good tequila. Spooky.

01.10.05 • baja critters (1)

2000-Z • f5.0 • 1/500 • ISO 100

Last year in Baja, while visiting my father, I took lots of critter shots. Afterall, once it warms up down there, there's more critters than you can believe. They usually, buzz, bite, fly, or all of the above. Thankfully they mind their own business. Again from old 2000-Z archives. I'm not sure what kind of spider this is.

01.09.05 • spring thoughts (2)

2000-Z • f6.3 • 1/500 • ISO 100

My last two photos have me looking forward to spring on the Deschutes. After the dark winter, and before the scorching heat, it explodes with life. I believe this is arrowleaf balsamroot. This photo is from 4 years ago, again with the Olympus.

01.08.05 • winter moods #2 (0)

2000-Z • f3.2 • 1/650 • ISO 100

Given how much you guys (all two of you) liked that last one, here's another from the same 'roll'. When is it NOT spectacular out there in the great wide open?! Don't worry veg, I'll be heading out soon I'm sure. I can't stand it much longer :-).

01.07.05 • winter moods (4)

2000-Z • f3.2 • 1/800 • ISO 100

I've been sifting through some older photos and finding some that I'd forgotten about. This is from December 2002, taken with my Olympus 2000-Z on a moody day on the magnificent Deschutes River. I really need to get back out there soon!

12.15.04 • holiday blooms (1)

D70 • f7.1 • 1/125 • ISO 200

I tried a number of different close ups on some flowers at a flower stand this last week. None of them really turned out the way I expected, but I'm posting this one anyway. I really love the deep dark colour. I may try some more of these soon if I get a chance.

12.13.04 • a study in flight (5)

D70 • f10 • 1/320 • ISO 400

I really don't know what I was doing taking pictures of these swarming birds, but they were awesome to watch. Swifts perhaps? Anyway, they were bombing around in this large flock making impossible direction changes at high speeds. A marvel to watch. This photo, while not technically all that super, captures so many different poses that I just can't look away! I applied a duplicate as a overlay and found I liked the grittier, moodier sky.

12.08.04 • more winter color (4)

D70 • f5.6 • 1/200 • ISO 400

While at the bank today, I caught site of this tree's berries from across the parking lot. They were so vibrant against the dull colors of, well, everything else.

12.07.04 • a little color (2)

D70 • f4.5 • 1/50 • ISO 400

I've noticed that maybe due to the weather or the time of year there hasn't been much color in my shots lately. Here's one to try to remedy that. This kind of photo I usually don't like, but this one catches my eye for some reason. Maybe the DOF works right, or the colors are just so nice, or something else. I'm not quite sure.

11.26.04 • iridescence (4)

D70 • f4.5 • 1/320 • ISO 200

Another from the roof of the building where the fall oat grass endures constant winds. Tonights poker game winner, Brian, named this one.

11.17.04 • deschutes river (0)

C-2000Z • f/3.2 • 1/800 • ISO 100

Oregon's Deschutes River on a blustery day is full of life just thrilled to get a break from the high desert heat. One of my favorite places, it can be a harsh environment, but offers world class fly-fishing for trout and steelhead, as well as whitewater rafting, bird-watching, and even bighorn sheep sitings high on the cliffs if you're lucky. This is an older photo from my 2MP Olympus, but I've always loved this shot.

10.30.04 • spooky (2)

2000-Z • f/2.2 • 1/500 • ISO ?

10.30.04 • sherar's fishermen (0)

2000-Z • f/2.5 • 1/650

Indians fish for salmon on the Deschutes River the old fashioned way.

10.30.04 • munch munch munch (0)

2000-Z • f/2.8 • 1/100s • ISO 160

This one always reminds me of spring in the Deschutes Canyon. These guys are everywhere, munching away.

This image made me think of http://www.portlandground.com/archives/2006/06/sidewalk_front_yard_budda.php ! I just stumbled upon your site today and I'm really enjoying looking at your pictures and remembering "hey I've been there or hey I used to live there!". I lived in downtown Portland for two years before moving back to the midwest a few months ago. I miss Portland soooooooooooo much. :o( But I'm glad I can relive my memories through your pictures!

Very nice image of the canyon. I really like the sky and how the stream leads the eye through the frame. Nicely done.

It's been too long between visits to your blog, you have some great images. That's a very creative gardener and your capture is fantastic.

I really like this shot - there's a great contrast between the sharp light trails on the right, and the more mellow blurring on the left. well done

Very Nice

Very moody image. Well seen and captured!

Not usually Rob, but I do take requests. And must admit that sometimes it takes me a while to get to them (since I have to reprocess them).

03.11.06 • 6:36pm • spring • Rob

Very beautiful. Do you ever post them in higher res for wallpaper?

Wow! Very nice shot. You have some great pix here man!!! I am just wondering on this particular shot how you get the lights and no cars... I see the camera settings under the title but I'm not a photographer so it doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Freakin awesome!

Makes me want to bust out my old Cannon AE-1. And I would if it hadn't pissed me off so many times! (realizing that I really need to stick with the disposable click boxes!)

The white tones are perfect. I like this one.

I always like to see pictures taken by other people, on the other side of the country, and know exactly where it was taken.

HA! I want that car! I've been looking for pictures all morning cuz I wanna paint my combi (in four years, I'll be out of school and old enough to drive a car so that's when I'll get one ....) just like that!

12.29.05 • 2:29pm • statue man #2kyle

He's been around for a few years I believe, but these are my first shots of him. You might be remembering someone else?

I'm not sure if he calls himself statue man, but others do I believe. I found an article about him versus the City of Portland, which you can read here.

12.29.05 • 11:36am • statue man #2the Robot Vegetable

This statue was there last year too, wasn't he? Seems like you had some pictures of him before.

Does he call himself Statue Man? I think of him as a robot man, but I've never seen him in action - he's usually just standing there when I go by.

12.28.05 • 6:15am • statue man #2Manual Exposure

This is an interesting composition. You've handled the silver body paint well, a tough material to photograph by itself, and the reflection captured in the performer's sunglasses has me asking what does he see? Wish there wasn't such a bright white diamond in the top middle of the frame from the crossing of the awnings--makes my eye go right to it.

Thanks everyone for the great comments. I'm glad to see you checking back even if I don't post often enough :-).

love the way the tones all blend together...a rather cool capture!
