Paul took this with the pinhole Sunday morning I believe. I love the colors and the impressionistic feel. Also, the Steel Bridge (two center rectangular bits) and Convention Center (two skinny spires left of center) are recognizable to sharp eyed Portlanders.

03.08.05 • guest: st. helens blows (37)

Well, after many months of nothing since Mt. St. Helens reawoke, we finally got a pretty nice blow today around 5:15pm. I rushed home but was too late to get photos. Thankfully, Paul was diligent and got a few nice ones from the roof.

Since some have asked for more info, here you go. This was taken from the top of our 8 story building in downtown Portland, Oregon. We are located appoximately 50 miles from Mount St. Helens. The window of opportunity was small, as the upper level winds knocked the plume over in a very short time. This was taken probably 15 minutes after the initial eruption. There was no sound or appreciable earthquakes before or during the eruption. Supposedly there were some small tremors at the mountain preceding the event, but nothing significant enough to call a warning. It is true this could present a very dangerous situation in the case of a very large eruption. Winds carried the ash to the northeast, and there was some ashfall as far away as Spokane, WA. Most of the area nearest the mountain is not heavily populated, so ash is the most likely danger. Since most of the mountain blew away in 1980, there is little chance of another cataclysmic event on that scale.

03.01.05 • guest: garbage train (6)

D70 • f4 • 1/800 • ISO 200

Another guest today, my friend Mike. You can see more of his photos at http://swamiphoto.homeip.net. In his own words:

This is a garbage train with a smelly load of trash from Seattle heading through the Columbia River Gorge to the landfill at Roosevelt, WA. Photo taken near Bingen, WA, Feb 26, 2005.

02.25.05 • guest: another baja morning (3)

C3000-Z • f2.8 • 1/100 • ISO 100

Another guest shot today, due to a sad lack of my own shots. Luckily, my father sent me this from just another amazing morning in Baja from the backyard. Looks like the shrimp boaters are still asleep at this hour. Last time I was down there, only 2 years ago, these palms were no higher than my waist!

02.23.05 • guest: signage (2)

D70 • f9 • 1/320 • ISO 200

Another guest photo since I haven't had a chance to get out much. Phillip is again my guest photog today. He caught this signage on the way to work today. Cool shadows.

02.21.05 • guest: glass urn (1)

D70 • f4.5 • 1/60 • ISO 200

My neighbor Phillip, todays guest photographer, recently visited a the studio of a friend that is a glass artist. These glass balls contain the ashes of the dearly departed. A very classy approach to the urn. Note that the red color depicted here is not entirely from the glass color. Rather, the ball is still glowing hot at this stage.

02.06.05 • guest: william temple house (3)

Another guest shot for this Sunday. Again from my neighbor Paul, this photo was taken a while back with the 'lensbabies' lens. I have another shot from this lens here, as well as links to their site.

12.19.04 • guest: fremont morning (2)

Coolpix • unknown

Thankfully I didn't actually have to be awake to take this shot. My neighbor Paul is todays guest photographer again. He caught this from our roof early yesterday morning.

11.28.04 • guest: bottomless heart (0)

D70 • f7.1 • 1/200 • ISO 200

Today I'm hosting another guest photographer, my neighbor, Paul. It was Paul and Areta's anniversary on Friday so they went out on a photo shoot of some local downtown industrial areas and came back with this cool photo. I notice that this is the second Sunday in a row that I'll be hosting a guest photo. Perhaps I'll see if I have enough interest to make it a regular Sunday thing. I'm always happy to host friends and guests, so don't be shy!

11.21.04 • guest: baja beater (2)

C-3000Z • f/2.8 • 1/40 • ISO 100

Today's photo is by my first guest photographer, my father. I love this shot! A great scene from near Los Barilles ("the barrels"), Baja, Mexico, where my father and step-mom live for part of the year.

This image made me think of http://www.portlandground.com/archives/2006/06/sidewalk_front_yard_budda.php ! I just stumbled upon your site today and I'm really enjoying looking at your pictures and remembering "hey I've been there or hey I used to live there!". I lived in downtown Portland for two years before moving back to the midwest a few months ago. I miss Portland soooooooooooo much. :o( But I'm glad I can relive my memories through your pictures!

Very nice image of the canyon. I really like the sky and how the stream leads the eye through the frame. Nicely done.

It's been too long between visits to your blog, you have some great images. That's a very creative gardener and your capture is fantastic.

I really like this shot - there's a great contrast between the sharp light trails on the right, and the more mellow blurring on the left. well done

Not usually Rob, but I do take requests. And must admit that sometimes it takes me a while to get to them (since I have to reprocess them).

Very beautiful. Do you ever post them in higher res for wallpaper?

Wow! Very nice shot. You have some great pix here man!!! I am just wondering on this particular shot how you get the lights and no cars... I see the camera settings under the title but I'm not a photographer so it doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Freakin awesome!

Makes me want to bust out my old Cannon AE-1. And I would if it hadn't pissed me off so many times! (realizing that I really need to stick with the disposable click boxes!)

The white tones are perfect. I like this one.

I always like to see pictures taken by other people, on the other side of the country, and know exactly where it was taken.

HA! I want that car! I've been looking for pictures all morning cuz I wanna paint my combi (in four years, I'll be out of school and old enough to drive a car so that's when I'll get one ....) just like that!

12.29.05 • 2:29pm • statue man #2kyle

He's been around for a few years I believe, but these are my first shots of him. You might be remembering someone else?

I'm not sure if he calls himself statue man, but others do I believe. I found an article about him versus the City of Portland, which you can read here.

12.29.05 • 11:36am • statue man #2the Robot Vegetable

This statue was there last year too, wasn't he? Seems like you had some pictures of him before.

Does he call himself Statue Man? I think of him as a robot man, but I've never seen him in action - he's usually just standing there when I go by.

12.28.05 • 6:15am • statue man #2Manual Exposure

This is an interesting composition. You've handled the silver body paint well, a tough material to photograph by itself, and the reflection captured in the performer's sunglasses has me asking what does he see? Wish there wasn't such a bright white diamond in the top middle of the frame from the crossing of the awnings--makes my eye go right to it.

Thanks everyone for the great comments. I'm glad to see you checking back even if I don't post often enough :-).
