Boxcar Rapids, on the Deschutes River.

Indian fishing platforms at Sherar's Falls on the Deschutes River. I think you've gotta be nuts to get out on one of those things. I have not idea how they get built. Hopefully they are more stable than they look.
Goin' to Vegas today. Hope to bring home some postable shots, but who knows if I'll take the time away from poker, craps, free(ish) booze, and walking 5 miles to "go next door".

Another siesta train, from a similar spot.

My view as I duck the midday heat on a shaded Deschutes canyon wall.

The train stop on the banks of the Deschutes River in Maupin, Oregon.

A shot from a couple weeks back on a trip to the Deschutes. Here's Paul navigating a steep riprap bank in search of quiet little spots tucked in between the rocks that sometimes hold large difficult rainbows. More times than not, we just get a good work out on the shifting, rattlesnake filled banks, but sometimes, it pays off.
07.08.05 • deschutes sunset (0)
I made it back out to one of my favorite places to be. The Deschutes River at dusk. It was hot in the canyon today, and the welcome cool of the evening seems to bring the canyon to life. Critter time to be sure. I've seen huge porcupines, deer, a bobcat, rattlesnakes, and many other cool creatures at this magical hour.
01.27.05 • canyon sage (0)
Another 'spring thoughts' type of photo from the archives. Spring in the Deschutes canyon is overwhelmed by the smell of fresh desert sage.

Another shot of Tygh Valley taken while pointing and clicking on the drive home from the Deschutes River. Just another gorgeous day east of the Cascades.

My last two photos have me looking forward to spring on the Deschutes. After the dark winter, and before the scorching heat, it explodes with life. I believe this is arrowleaf balsamroot. This photo is from 4 years ago, again with the Olympus.

Given how much you guys (all two of you) liked that last one, here's another from the same 'roll'. When is it NOT spectacular out there in the great wide open?! Don't worry veg, I'll be heading out soon I'm sure. I can't stand it much longer :-).

I've been sifting through some older photos and finding some that I'd forgotten about. This is from December 2002, taken with my Olympus 2000-Z on a moody day on the magnificent Deschutes River. I really need to get back out there soon!
11.17.04 • deschutes river (0)
Oregon's Deschutes River on a blustery day is full of life just thrilled to get a break from the high desert heat. One of my favorite places, it can be a harsh environment, but offers world class fly-fishing for trout and steelhead, as well as whitewater rafting, bird-watching, and even bighorn sheep sitings high on the cliffs if you're lucky. This is an older photo from my 2MP Olympus, but I've always loved this shot.

Indians fish for salmon on the Deschutes River the old fashioned way.

This one always reminds me of spring in the Deschutes Canyon. These guys are everywhere, munching away.

This image made me think of http://www.portlandground.com/archives/2006/06/sidewalk_front_yard_budda.php ! I just stumbled upon your site today and I'm really enjoying looking at your pictures and remembering "hey I've been there or hey I used to live there!". I lived in downtown Portland for two years before moving back to the midwest a few months ago. I miss Portland soooooooooooo much. :o( But I'm glad I can relive my memories through your pictures!

Very nice image of the canyon. I really like the sky and how the stream leads the eye through the frame. Nicely done.

It's been too long between visits to your blog, you have some great images. That's a very creative gardener and your capture is fantastic.

I really like this shot - there's a great contrast between the sharp light trails on the right, and the more mellow blurring on the left. well done

Not usually Rob, but I do take requests. And must admit that sometimes it takes me a while to get to them (since I have to reprocess them).

Very beautiful. Do you ever post them in higher res for wallpaper?

Wow! Very nice shot. You have some great pix here man!!! I am just wondering on this particular shot how you get the lights and no cars... I see the camera settings under the title but I'm not a photographer so it doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Freakin awesome!
Makes me want to bust out my old Cannon AE-1. And I would if it hadn't pissed me off so many times! (realizing that I really need to stick with the disposable click boxes!)

The white tones are perfect. I like this one.

I always like to see pictures taken by other people, on the other side of the country, and know exactly where it was taken.

HA! I want that car! I've been looking for pictures all morning cuz I wanna paint my combi (in four years, I'll be out of school and old enough to drive a car so that's when I'll get one ....) just like that!

He's been around for a few years I believe, but these are my first shots of him. You might be remembering someone else?
I'm not sure if he calls himself statue man, but others do I believe. I found an article about him versus the City of Portland, which you can read here.
12.29.05 • 11:36am • statue man #2 • the Robot Vegetable
This statue was there last year too, wasn't he? Seems like you had some pictures of him before.
Does he call himself Statue Man? I think of him as a robot man, but I've never seen him in action - he's usually just standing there when I go by.

This is an interesting composition. You've handled the silver body paint well, a tough material to photograph by itself, and the reflection captured in the performer's sunglasses has me asking what does he see? Wish there wasn't such a bright white diamond in the top middle of the frame from the crossing of the awnings--makes my eye go right to it.

Thanks everyone for the great comments. I'm glad to see you checking back even if I don't post often enough :-).
