I'm not so sure I like this one, but here it is... Just a quick click...
11.19.05 • night crane (1)
So I went and missed the first birthday of this site, which should have been November 6th. I started a new job this week, so I know now I will officially not have much time for lots of photography for a while. Expect posts here and there but not so frequently.
This was caught last night on the roof. Last week they constructed a very large crane across the street, which looked kinda cool at night. It took two other cranes, one small, the other medium, to construct the large crane. Interesting to watch.
Oh yeah, and Happy Birthday to my dad!

In order of appearance, the Steel, Broadway, and Fremont Bridges. Similar to a long ago pic seen here.
02.12.05 • hawthorne fog (1)
This is from last weeks fog outing again. I was considering putting this up third, but forgot about it when Paul gave me the guest shot for Sunday. Anyway... another from a foggy Portland morning.
02.05.05 • hawthorne commute (3)
Taken shortly after yesterday's photo. A busy morning commute over the Hawthorne bridge into downtown Portland. Bravo to the cold morning bicyclists! There may have been more bikes than cars while I was taking these.
01.30.05 • st. johns tug (1)
Another from my trip down to the St. Johns bridge. I didn't really like this shot until I decided to crop it square. Again, I'm running out of old photos and need to get out and shoot some more. I guess that is the whole idea with this one-a-day process. Sometimes you can't put up something super. But forcing yourself to put one up is a great exercise, and you never know how others will react to photos that you just think are so-so.
Thanks for all the support and visits. I've been lax in getting around to all my favorite photo sites recently, but I'll be back soon.
01.22.05 • burlington northern bridge (1)
Went for a short drive today down the Willamette River. Crossed the St. John's Bridge, and found this shot of the Burlington Northern bridge. Trains only! Too bad I accidentally took all these shots at ISO 800. Oh well, this one still turned out nice.
01.21.05 • hawthorne evening (0)
This shot of the Hawthorne Bridge was taken last summer on a bike ride. Probably for pints at the brewpub. Sorry for all the older photos lately folks. I've not had access to the D70 for a while, but I'm hoping to remedy that soon.
12.19.04 • guest: fremont morning (2)
Thankfully I didn't actually have to be awake to take this shot. My neighbor Paul is todays guest photographer again. He caught this from our roof early yesterday morning.
11.11.04 • fremont rush (5)
Not much to say about this one. I don't like many of my night shots, but still experiment with long exposures because you never know. I liked this one once I desaturated all but the tail-lights, drawing attention to the evening rush hour.

When we first had the D70, we didn't have anything but a lensbabie lens. It emulates an old bellows style camera, and you must operate totally manually by squeezing the little accordian shaped lens to achieve the focal point and depth you desire. It's tricky, but sometimes it works. If you like it, check out lensbabies.com.
10.30.04 • fremont blur (0)
Handheld at night, this was just me toying with the D70 after being put out of the big poker game. I think the little bowties effect is what makes this one fun. I thought nothing of it at the time, but it turned out to be a nice surprise.

This image made me think of http://www.portlandground.com/archives/2006/06/sidewalk_front_yard_budda.php ! I just stumbled upon your site today and I'm really enjoying looking at your pictures and remembering "hey I've been there or hey I used to live there!". I lived in downtown Portland for two years before moving back to the midwest a few months ago. I miss Portland soooooooooooo much. :o( But I'm glad I can relive my memories through your pictures!

Very nice image of the canyon. I really like the sky and how the stream leads the eye through the frame. Nicely done.

It's been too long between visits to your blog, you have some great images. That's a very creative gardener and your capture is fantastic.

I really like this shot - there's a great contrast between the sharp light trails on the right, and the more mellow blurring on the left. well done

Not usually Rob, but I do take requests. And must admit that sometimes it takes me a while to get to them (since I have to reprocess them).

Very beautiful. Do you ever post them in higher res for wallpaper?

Wow! Very nice shot. You have some great pix here man!!! I am just wondering on this particular shot how you get the lights and no cars... I see the camera settings under the title but I'm not a photographer so it doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Freakin awesome!
Makes me want to bust out my old Cannon AE-1. And I would if it hadn't pissed me off so many times! (realizing that I really need to stick with the disposable click boxes!)

I always like to see pictures taken by other people, on the other side of the country, and know exactly where it was taken.

HA! I want that car! I've been looking for pictures all morning cuz I wanna paint my combi (in four years, I'll be out of school and old enough to drive a car so that's when I'll get one ....) just like that!
12.29.05 • 2:29pm • statue man #2 • kyle
He's been around for a few years I believe, but these are my first shots of him. You might be remembering someone else?
I'm not sure if he calls himself statue man, but others do I believe. I found an article about him versus the City of Portland, which you can read here.
12.29.05 • 11:36am • statue man #2 • the Robot Vegetable
This statue was there last year too, wasn't he? Seems like you had some pictures of him before.
Does he call himself Statue Man? I think of him as a robot man, but I've never seen him in action - he's usually just standing there when I go by.

This is an interesting composition. You've handled the silver body paint well, a tough material to photograph by itself, and the reflection captured in the performer's sunglasses has me asking what does he see? Wish there wasn't such a bright white diamond in the top middle of the frame from the crossing of the awnings--makes my eye go right to it.

Thanks everyone for the great comments. I'm glad to see you checking back even if I don't post often enough :-).
